SEATO DEFENCE PLANS
TALKS AT PEARL HARBOUR (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 16. Three senior officers of the New Zealand services will leave tomorrow for Pearl Harbour to attend a SEATO subcommittee meeting on “threat evaluation.” The officers are: Lieutenant-Colonel R. B. Dawson, Wing Commander R. H. Warcup, and Commander J. R. Pritchard. The committee, which will meet on March 19, will carry out preliminary work on plans for SEATO defence. The New Zealand delegation includes both planning and intelligence experts. Previous meetings of this committee have considered the basic threat to various parts of the treaty area in isolation. and without taking into account any measures SEATO might take to counter the threat. At the same time, meetings of staff planners have examined various counter-measures open to SEATO. One of the purposes of the meeting beginning on Monday will be to consider the results of previous intelligence and planning conferences, and to evaluate the threat remaining to the treaty area as a whole.
