EASTER MEETING AT ADDINGTON

TROTTING

Marshall Foi Should Race Weh

KELSO SELECTED TO WIN AGAIN

Marshall Foi may make amends for his rather unlucky defeat by Golden Marino in the New Brighton Cup last month, when he races in the Fendalton Handicap on the opening day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting at Addington today. In the New Brighton race, Marshall Foi was just starting a run when he was involved in an accident. He was conceding the leaders a big start approaching the straight and then finished brilliantly to get within two and a half lengths of the winner. His performance was a grand staying effort and from 12 yards today it is difficult to see him beaten. Battalion, a winner over two miles at Forbury Park last month at his last appearance, may offer most opposition to Marshall Foi. Battalion is another fine stayer and with a smooth beginning, he should be running on better than most of the others at the finish. Cassado, a winner in August at her only start this season, will be in demand. She has paced her best races over two miles and from 24 vards she cannot be dismissed. She is a stablemate of Rupee and Daybreak. Both have shown fine form this season. The Te Awamutu-trained Ruth Again will have support. She has raced most consistently this season for four wins and six placings from 11 starts. She has not always been reliable at the start of her races in the North Island, but she may be prominent tn her first annearance at Addington.

Covrex, the Greymouth Cup winner, Nipalong, Light Nurse and Trueco have all shown good form this season • and they should do best of the others in an open race. Kelso will be a firm favourite to bring his record to three successive wins in the Bryndwr Handicap. The Young Bob gelding will not be set an easy task from 24 yards, but he has only nine horses starting in front of him. • Tehana. runner-up to Light Nurse over one mile and a half at New Brighton last month, looks well placed on the front mark. The Stylish Wilkes gelding has good speed and he should te well suited by the distance of one mile and five furlongs. Royal Minstrel has been running on at the end of his recent races and he is overdue for a win. If he reproduces his best form, he will have bright prospects. Coincident and Gay Cobra have paced sound races in recent weeks and they may be the pick of the other horses on the front mark. Tartan, a winner at Epsom in December, Princess Dillonia, Martini and Lady Shona are other capable pacers likely to add interest to the finish. Beehive, a stablemate of Starbeam, which will be one of the favourites for the Rattray Handicap, should win his fifth race for the season in the Spreydon Handicap. The Indianapolis gelding has good speed and has shown more stamina than most of the others in the race. Useful Trotter Hazel Grattan, which has been racing against the pacers lately, has to concede 24 yards to Beehive, but if she trots right up to her best, she may be one of the hardest to beat. Her efforts over the last few months have been meritorious. Quite Contrary finished a long list of placings with a popular win at Washdyke last week. She will start from 24 yards today, but this may not prevent her from doing well. The Quite Sure mare seldom trots a bad race and she will be solidly supported on the place totalisator. Fifth Brigade has not trotted badly for some time and if she is not forced over too much extra ground in the middle stages she should be prominent at the finish. She may not go far but she should continue to pay hei way in her present class. Centennial Star, which shares the back mark of 48 yards with Haze Grattan, has plenty of speed and hif prospects cannot be overlooked. Circlette. which is now trained by C. R. Berkett at Templeton, and Wee Raider make most appeal of the others. The club has received disappointin? support from owners and trainers foi the Preliminary Handicap, a race foi probationary drivers. A field of eight including one bracket, is carded. More than 20 horses are eligible for the race and have been entered later at tht meeting. D. G. Nyhan’s bracket of Ricoche and Dresden Lady will probably b< firm favourites for the race. Ricoche won the Timaru Challenge Stakes ii January and has been placed in hi two starts since then. If he work: clear early, he should set a difficul task. Stavanger, a very easy winner a New Brighton last month, may be th< hardest for Ricochet to beat. If hi young driver can get the best fron him, Stavanger is certain to be prom inent. Auriferous, which has made somi sound efforts this season, and LindBridget, which has shown speed ii some of her races, make most appea of the others. W. R. Butt’s bracket of Te Koi Kingsdown Direct, Stadium Chief ant Surfman will be firm favourites for th<

Rothschild Handicap, thd first leg of the double. The chances of Scottish! Brigade, Esteem, Golden Marino and ■ Distant Star are also highly regarded.' Starbeam, which will be bracketed I, with Brahman and Jaunty, may be the | < hardest to beat in the second leg, the Rattray Handicap. Our Kentucky. Super Nurse and Black Douglas are other prospects in this race. Selections are:— 11 a.m.—Preliminary Handicap: Ricochet.
