WHERE THE NEW ZEALAND ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION WILL HAVE ITS BASE.—A view looking north-west across New Harbour, McMurdo Sound, from the terrace chosen for the headquarters of the New Zealand Antarctic party. The site is an almost level ledge of sand, dotted with boulders, at the foot of a rocky promontory four miles from Butter Point. It is sheltered and ice-free. The point at the top right of this photograph is Cape Bernacchi, 13 miles distant. The Ferrar glacier runs south-west to the polar plateau off the left of the picture. —Trans-Antarctic Expedition.
