MADRIGAL GROUP
CANTERBURY COLLEGE RECITAL
The first of the 1955 series of lunchtime concerts was given in the Canterbury University College Hall on Thursday by the Madrigal Group of the College Musical Society. If all the concerts this year reach the standard of performance attained by this choir of 14. patrons indeed have much to look forward to. In every respect, the programme and its presentation left little to be desired. The Madrigal Group has maintained for so long.its own standard of excellence in interpretation and execution that its existence can no longer be regarded as a passing phase in Christchurch music. It is no fluke, and music-lovers will take pleasure in accepting this comparatively new medium as something permanent. Sixteen madrigals by half that number of composers were heard. The diverse styles in no case eluded the singers, who, conducted by William Hawkey, displayed a lively and intelligent response to the changing moods, dynamic levels, textural contrasts, and the meaning of the words sung. Vitality and an imaginative sympathy for the composers’ intentions were always in evidence.
From the fun and games of Bennet’s “All Creatures Now” to the halcyon calm of “Flow not so Fast, Ye Fountains.” by Dowland, there was exhibited a mastery of all situations which betokens an expert understanding of the foundations of good choral technique.
The recital concluded with a refreshing novelty. Bela Bartok’s cycle of “Four Slovak Folk-songs” is a delightful work, colourful and stimulating and easy to listen to. Accompanied sensitively by Malcolm Tait, the group sang “Medzibrod” with bright abandon and established successfully the mythical atmosphere in the “Wedding Song.” —J.A.R.
