NEW CANTERBURY RECORDS D. EATON BETTERS MEN’S BUTTERFLY TIME A 14-ysar-old schoolboy last evening broke a Canterbury senior men’s swimming record. Derek Eaton, swimming unpaced, took nearly 3sec from the record, for the 110 yards butterfly. Eaton s special attempt was one of a number supervised by officials of the Canterbury Swimming Centre at the Centennial Pool. Eaton, who is a member of the Elmwood Swimming Club and junior champion at the Christchurch Boys’ High School, is best known as a freestyle swimmer. At the beginning of February, two weeks before the national junior and intermediate championships in Napier, ne tried the butterfly stroke at the suggestion of his coach (Mr John Broomfield, the Elmwood club captain). » The experiment showed that Eaton had an aptitude for the stroke. His proficiency was shown in Napier when he took the intermediate boys’ 100 yards title from the experienced G. Marks (Otago) and Mark Tinsley (Auckland). Last evening Eaton, who is sft 7in tali, and weighs 9st 41b, covered 110 yards in 83.7 sec. The previous record, set by D. Baruch (Beckenham) a year ago, was 86.5 sec. “I won’t be giving up freestyle, though," said Eaton after his record-breaking effort. His best time for the 100 yards freestyle is 61.8 sec, close to senior sprint times. Another Elmwood swimmer broke the junior 110 yards record. Alastair McPhail, the national 220 yards junior freestyle champion, lowering to 69.95ec his own Canterbury record of 72sec set up two months ago. McPhail’s best time for the 100 yards freestyle is 62.25ec. For his age (14) he is solidly built, slightly taller and three or four pounds heavier than Eaton. He has represented Canterbury for the last three seasons. A "best time” attempt for an event for which a record can be recognised but for which a record has not yet been established was set by McPhail’s 12-year-old sister. Janet McPhail, who is the junior swimming champion at St. Margaret’s College. Miss McPhail swam 55 yards in 38.7 sec to better her own previous best time of 40.7 sec in the under 12 girls’ event. Miss McPhail is 'a member of the Elmwood club and has been competing for two years. This summer she was a Canterbury representative at the Napier championships.
