MINOR FIRES
A hedge fire on the property of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd., in Waterloo road, Riccarton, was extinguished by units from the Christchurch Fire Brigade and the Paparua County Council fire tender about 8.15 a.m. yesterday. The fire is believed to have been caused by a spark from a locomotive. At 12.58 p.m., units from the Central station and New Brighton were called to a grass fire on a vacant section at 375 Marine parade, New Brighton, owned by the North Canterbury Timber Co., Rangiora. Heat from the fire scorched the wall of a house on the adjacent section and caused the paint to blister. Another fire caused slight damage to a carpet and flooring of a flat at 122 Papanui road, occupied by Miss Jean Sutherland. The fire, which was believed to have been caused by an electric iron which was left switched on, was attended by two units from the Central station at 5.15 p.m.
