EMPLOYMENT OF PLUMBERS

UNION SECRETARY’S COMMENT (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON? March 12. “There are more than enough registered plumbers to do the sanitary plumbing work available in New Zealand at present,” said the national secretary of the New Zealand Plumbers’, Gasfitters’, and Related Trades’ Union (Mr H. Thompson) at Wellington today, commenting on the statement at Invercargill by the Minister of Health (Mr J. R. Hanan) that unregistered plumbers should, in the absence of registered men, be allowed to carry on in their livelihood. “Officers of the Health Department who advise the Minister have not yet substantiated statements such as the one made today at Invercargill, though they had ample opportunity to do so when the Plumbers’ Registration Act was before the House as a bill in 1953,” Mr Thompson said. At least 60 per cent, of New Zealand plumbers were registered, and sanitary plumbing made up no more than 45 per cent, of plumbing work, Mr Thompson added.
