Protest Strikes In Cyprus
(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) NICOSIA, March 13. Strikes in protest against the deportation of Archbishop Makarios today deprived Cyprus of its newspapers and left schools, shops, and industry idle. A 17-year-old Cypriot Greek student died in hospital in Nicosia after being shot by British security forces when he ignored a challenge to halt when a bomb was thrown at two Army lorries. In Greece, the Council of the Greek Trade Unions will (meet today to fix a date for a general strike in protest against the deportation of the Archbishop. Thirty demonstrators and 2* police were injured in a clash in Athens last night.
