Misunderstanding on "Home Rule”
Misunderstanding about, the attitude of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association conference to “home rule for the South Island’’ had arisen from a report that a Mt. Herbert County Council remit was lost by 24 votes to 17. said the president (Mr E. C. Bathurst) at a meeting of the executive. Actually he had got to 24 in counting votes against, and declared the motion lost, but there were even more opposed. It was important to the prestige of the association that that should be made clear, paid Mr D. H. Cockburn. The report had caused much criticism of the association. “I don’t think anyone would think of home rule. but this body Should not ignore the possibilities of mure decentralisation which was the main purpose of the remit.” said Mr R M. Macfarlane. M.P. (Christchurch). His suggetion that a committee discuss Ideas with the Mt. Herbert County Council and report to the executive was adopted.
