ANNUAL PARADE OF R.N.Z.N.V.R.

INSPECTION HELD IN CRANMER SQUARE CADET CORPS SERVICE MEDALS PRESENTED As the strains of “Scotland the Brave” were heard in the distance, the ship’s company of H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus, the shore establishment of the Canterbury Division of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve, and two companies of the Sea Cadet Corps, marched on to Cranmer square on Saturday morning for the -.annual inspection. Several score official guests and about 200 spectators gathered on the east side of the square to see the salute taken by the Chief of the Naval Staff (Rear-Admiral J. E. *H. Mcßeath). Rear-Admiral Mcßeath -was accompanied by Commander J. D. Keay, director of reserves and mobilisation. They were received by Commander J. N. Allen, commanding officer of the division, and with the parade commander, Lieutenant-Com-mander P. Austin, inspected the parade of 170 officers and men and about 160 cadets. After the inspection, Rear-Admiral Mcßeath took the salute at the march-past, to the accompaniment of selections by the band of H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus. It was the first time for some years that the division had been able to parade on the square. Often because of bad weather, Rhe inspection has had to be held in the Drill Hall or aboard H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus. Trophies and Prizes Rear-Admiral Mcßeath presented the Cadet Forces long service medal to Lieutenant (Sp.) L. A. Carr, R.N.Z.N.V.R.. and Lieutenant Commander (Sp.) F. J. Glanville, R.N.Z.N.V.R. Mrs Mcßeath presented trophies and prizes as follows: Prizes of commanding officer, H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus for best Sea Cadet in each closed unit: Sea Cadet Petty Officer J. Porter (Christ’s College). Cadet P. Robson (Christchurch Technical College), Leading Cadet I. Hunter (Christchurch Boys' High School), and Cadet D. Barron (St. Andrew’s College); prize of director of naval reserves for best Sea Cadet in open unit: Sea Cadet Petty Officer D. H. Randall. R.N.V.R. Division attendance shield: engine-room division (collected by Engineering Mechanic first class B. E. Reed). Peddie cup, for most improved miscellaneous rating: Sick Berth Artificer I. D. Taylor. R.N.V.R. Canterbury division cup, for most improved engineroom rating: Engineering Mechanic first class B. E. Reed. Pegasus wireless telegraphy cup, for most, improved wireless telegraphy rating: Ordinary Telegraphist R. R. Graham. David L. Jones memorial cup, for most improved electrical rating: Electrical Mechanic first class C. W. Claxton. Captain Newman cup, for most improved torpedo-anti-submarine rating: Able Seaman W. G. Anderton. R.N.V.R. signal shield, for most improved signalman: Ordinary Signalman D. T. Collins. R.N.V.R. Canterbury division efficiency shield, for most improved gunnery rating: Ordinary Seaman K. S. Clarke. Prize of director of naval reserves for best first year rating: Ordinary Telegraphist W. Fanning. Urry memorial cup, for most efficient gunnery rating: Leading Seaman E. Coburn. H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus cup, for all round efficiency: Ordinary Seaman K. G. Johnson. Chief of staff’s prize, for rating passed most successfully the examination for higher rate: Leading Seaman Coburg. Naval Board prize, for best all-round rating: Chief Petty Officer Telegraphist E. Sorenson.
