ANTARCTIC FUND APPEAL
COUNTY TAKES NO ACTION “I am very much against the principle of rating people to provide money for this kind of thing. If the Government wants to send expedition to Antarctica, then let it finance it,” said Cr. R. C. Gilberthorpe, when the Paparua County Council was discussing last evening an appeal by the Christchurch Antarctic Appeal Committee for funds to finance the New Zealand Antarctic expedition. No action was taken. The letter was .formally received. The letter, similar to those which have been sent to other local bodies, sought a grant from the council. “I think at a previous council meeting we decided to open a list at the office for subscriptions,” said the chairman (Mr J. D. Henderson). He asked the county clerk (Mr A. Kelly) what were the results of the list. “So far. very poor,” said Mr Kelly. “I am not in favour of this council giving a grant,” said Cr. Gilberthorpe. “You can see from the little response we have had at the office that the people are not interested in it.” “I agree entirely.” said Cr. J. H. Weaver. “I am not in favour of demanding money from ratepayers and then giving it away.”
