CAMBRIDGE FINISHES FOURTH SOMERSET FAIR FAILS IN STAKES (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, March 12. The New Zealand horse, Cambridge, the favourite, failed to stay, and finished fourth in the £4OOO Australian Cup, run over two miles and one furlong and a half, at Flemington today. Pushover, ridden by *R. Hutchinson, scored a surprise win in the Flemington record time of 3min 41’sec. It was Hutchinson’s fourth winning ride of the day. One of his earlier successes was on the former New Zealand horse. Harry Lime which won the £lOOO Essendon Handicap’ Cambridge started at 9 to 4. and in the early stages was third last, almost half a furlong behind the leader. Cloaked Cambridge’s jockey, A. Mulley, brought Hie gelding through on the rails, then moved out, and at the half-mile he was on the outside. It was obvious just after passing the two furlongs that Cambridge could not win. He was under pressure and was not making up any ground. In the £lO,OOO weight-for-age, Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the New Zealand horse Somerset Fair, which started second favourite at 9- to 4. had every chance, but ran a disappointing sixth. The winner. Sailor’s Guide, finished a short half head in front of Cromis, and brought his stake winnings to £17.655 He has started 19 times for six wins, two seconds, and four thirds.
