TREASON TRIAL IN INDONESIA
Jurists Protest At Procedure (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, March 11 The executive committee of the International Commission of Jurists has told the Indonesian Ambassador in London that Leon Jungschlaeger, a 53-year-old Dutchman charged with treason, has not been accorded a fair trial. Jungschlaeger. former head of Dutch military intelligence in Indonesia, has been on trial at Jakarta for more than a year on charges of leading a guerrilla organisation against the Indonesian Government. The message to the Ambasador said that the committee did not express an opinion about the guilt or innocence of the accused man. “It is. however, abundantly clear from information received by the commission that the accused. Jungschlaeger. has not been accorded a fair trial in conformity with the fundamental principles of legal procedure recognised by civilised nations,” the message said. The committee maintained that “apparently no sufficient measures were taken to protect the trial from the influence of public passion.” It also said that Jungschlaeger did not have the privilege of a trained, experienced, and independent lawyer, which was the minimum prerequisite for a fair trial.
