ROXBURGH HYDRO PROJECT

WORK TO CEASE FOR EASTER PERIOD The Roxburgh hydro-electric project was a contract job, and it was sntirely “up to the contractors” to decide whether work would be done over the Easter holiday period, the Minister of Works (Mr W. S. Goosman) told “The Press” yesterday. Mr Goosman will visit the Roxburgh scheme .to inspect progress next Monday. In a letter to the editor of “The Press,” a correspondent signing himself “See Hydro Works at Work.” asked what holidays Roxburgh workers would have at Easter, and when the main pour would end. The contractors (Messrs Cubitts, Zschokke, Downer) replied as follows: “Work . . . will cease a* midnight an Thursday, March 29, and will recommence early on the morning of Wednesday, April 4. Concrete pouring is already reduced, and takes place between 4 p.m. and 8 a.m. daily. It is expected that this will continue until mid-winter.” “I am afraid I have not heard it mentioned; nobody has spoken to me about it,” said Mr Goosman when the contractors’ reply was referred to him. “I would think that the contractors would not continue over Easter. It is a contract job, and it is entirely a matter for the contractors, and with statutory holidays and all it would be pretty hard to go outside.”
