FIRE DESTROYS HOUSE
OUTCOME OF TOKAANU EARTHQUAKE (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. March 6. A direct outcome of the week-end earthquakes at Tokaanu was a fire that razed a combined dwelling and restaurant at Turangi, four miles from Tokaanu, this afternoon. Flames worked their way through the bricks of a kitchen chimney that had been jolted out of alignment by the earthquake, and set fire to the building. Alone in the house, Mrs H. E. Holman did not notice the fire until it had a good hold. Though she and a neighbour battled to extinguish it with buckets of water and a wet sack, flames ate into the ceiling and roof. When they opened the manhole in the ceiling fierce flames forced them back, and they had to turn to salvaging personal possessions. Other neighbours helped to salvage furniture, but had to ston when tiles fell from the i*oof. Fanned by a strong wind, the flames then threatened a neighbouring accommodation house, and residents had to bulldoze a fire break.
