RUSSIA AND INDONESIA

Welcome For Aid From Soviet (Rec 9 p.m.) MOSCOW, March 3. Indonesia announced today that it would welcome economic assistance from Russia. A statement which the Indonesian Embassy issued in Moscow acknowledged Russia’s “constant support” for the Indonesian cause. The statement accused the Netherlands of having tried to maintain an unpopular union between the Dutch and Indonesians. An Embassy spokesman said that the statement' was designed to anticipate Dutch reaction to Indonesia’s abrogation of the Dutch-Indonesian union on February 13. The Indonesian Charge d’Affaires, Mi- Darmanto, said: “We have anticipated comments, let us say in the Netherlands and other countries, which might reach Moscow.” “The manner of issuing the statement is unusual, but the end justifies the means.” Mr Darmanto said that Indonesia would welcome economic assistance “from any side whatsoever,” including Russia. [The Dutch do not recognise Indonesia’s action in abrogating the union and pulling out of economic and financial agreement.]
