CHURCH PARADE

CHRISTCHURCH NURSING DIVISION A church parade at St. Mary’s Church, Merivale. last evening was the first of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Christchurch Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, which will be held this week. About 80 present and past members of the division who attended were ushered into the church by Mr A. E. Kincaid, a warden of the church, who is also chairman of the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society. The Rev. Ross Eaton, who was the preacher, mentioned that the roots of the St. John organisation went back 1000 years. The first lesson was read by Mr J. H. Rhodes, a Knight of Grace of the Order of St. John, and Dr. Gordon Rich, Commissioner for the Si. John Ambulance Brigade, read the second lesson.

Visitors included the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs R. M. Macfarlane) and the secretary of the Canterbury and West Coast centre of the brigade, Major-General G. B. Parkinson.

Amongst well-known women workers for the St. John divisions present were Mrs N.. Mclntosh, Lady Corps Superintendent; Miss L. P. Butter, district superintendent; Mrs E. Lumb, present superintendent of the Christchurch Nursing Division; Mrs Fricker (a serving sister of the order), Miss J. Pegler Mrs D. K. Thomas, Mrs A. E. Hamilton (a serving sister of the Order), all of whom have been lady superintendents; and Dr. J. Restell Thomas, who gave valuable service as a divisional surgeon.

After the service last evening, memoers and their friends enjoyed a cup of tea jn the St. John Ambulance rooms, where golden daisies and a gold-coloured cloth gave a golden jubilee appearance to the rooms. v T " IS . , even ,ing a picture party will be held and on Wednesday a golden jubilee dinner will be held.

O, ’ nStOne <PianlSt >’ and Manehaii.—Mrs Baker presided at the monthly meeting of the Mairehau Countrv Women s Institute and welcomed to the meeting an English visitor, Mrs Tomkmson, and Mesdames A. W. Pattison and M. Dayis who accompanied her. Mrs Tompkmson gave an interesting talk and Mrs Kitchen showed members how to make driftwood decorations, using leaves, berries, grasses, and small china animals. It was arranged to have the names O f cup winners on the Beck shield. Arrangements were made to help “Operation Snowball.” Mrs Baker thanked Mrs Walter for presiding at a meeting during her illness, and thanked other members who had shown her kindness during her illness.

Springston South.—The Springston South Country Women’s Institute apointed a delegate to attend the biennial conference of women's institutes in Auckland in July. Mesdames J. Blakemore and N. Buckley gave a donation towards the delegate’s expenses. Nominations were received for president and committee. A letter was read from the mother of the Greek child sponsored by the institute, and Mrs R. Harris (president) gave a talk on her recent trip to Motueka and Nelson. Hostesses were Mesdames A. Powell and J. Collins.

Springston.—A birthday spray was presented to the secretary, Mrs R. Findlay, at the monthly meeting of the Springston Country Women’s Institute. A letter from the institute’s link in Cumberland was read. Arrangements were made for the annual picnic to be held by members. The roll call, "Sing, Say or Penny Pay,” received a good response. Mrs T. B. Howson presided, and hostesses were Mesdames H. G. Hoskin and F. E. Hoskin.

Le Bon’s Bay.—" One may talk too much on the best of subjects,” was the motto read at the monthly meeting of the Le Bon’s Bay Country Women’s Institute. There was a good response to the roll call, “A Washday Hint.” Mrs L. Crotty presided and nominations were received for the committee for the year. Mr Gordon Hueston spoke on a proposed flower show at Akaroa. Hostesses were Mrs S. Reed and Mrs F. Spurr.
