CORSO RELIEF FOR WHITE RUSSIANS
AGED REFUGEES LEAVE CHINA
Thirteen bales of clothing and footwear collected by CORSO in New Zealand were distributed to a group of 250 elderly White Russians who passed through Hong Kong recently from China on their way to an “eventide” existence in Denmark, Belgium, Italy, South America and the United States. Many recent fires among the flimsy dwellings of the Chinese refugees in Hong Kong had completely exhausted the Salvation Army’s and the Red Cross Society's stocks of relief goods when the CORSO shipment arrived. Mr Ken Thornton, a New Zealander who is head of the Hong Kong Y.M.C.A., had just received a shipment of CORSO relief goods from New Zealand when the refugees arrived. Entertaining them at a tea party, he handed a chit td all who obviously needed newer of more clothing. This enabled them to call later and be individually fitted out. The Bible Society also gave those who asked for it a Testament in Russian. The Chinese Government when releasing the refugees- sent all the younger Russians, some of whom had been in China since the 1917 Revolution, back to Soviet territory.
