SOUTHLAND TEAM MAY BE PROMINENT AT WINGATUI

RACING

W. E. Hazlett, the Invercargill , owner-trainer, seems assured of a successful meeting at Wingatui today, when the Dunedin Jockey Club will hold the first day of it’s autumn meeting. His small but select team includes Capet, Obelisk, Tisred and Skylight which have all been placed at their last starts. The other two members of the stable, Shirley’s Pride and Bobbie Burns, are both capable on their day, and could be prominent. The Wingatui trainer H. A. Anderton, who has a big team of jumpers in work, will parade four candidates in the Taieri Hurdles, first event on the programme. The most experienced of them is the top-weight, Some Bounder, which has two wins and three placings to his credit from five starts in hurdle events this season. In his training at Wingatui this week, the Sun King gelding has been taking chances at his fences, but will not be able to afford to do so if he is to be successful today. Capet, which is one of the two four-year-olds in the field, is usually a reliable jumper and will form a strong bracket with Shirley’s Pride. The Sir Simper gelding has finished second in each of hjs last two races, although on the former occasion his rider weighed in light and he was disqualified. He appeals as the most likely improver in the field. Superdowa, which finished third behind Milling Bay and Capet at Invercargill, but was later promoted to second, also appears to be improving and could be placed. Lyndel’s Choice, which will be having his first race as a jumper, gave a dashing display in his trial at Wingatui yesterday and could be the one to upset the favourites. Count Aven, winner of the Middle

1 I Park Plate at Riccarton at his last a start, is the favourite for the Dunedin , I Handicap for two-year-olds, over five 1 furlongs. Most opposition for Count - I Aven may come from D. P. Wilson’s s well-bred filly, Fuel, a daughter of the t good race mare, The Grate. r Fuel was successful at her second f start in the Simper Stakes at Invercar2 gill. Bobbie Burns has not raced since , the New Zealand Cup meeting but may go well fresh and the Riccarton - trained Purser may do best of the i remainder. i Jeune, a good third behind Phila- ? delphia and Miss Commission at Ricf carton early this month, may improve , on that placing in the Trial Handicap s No. 1. Patriona and Senna are ex--5 pected to be the Treasure Hunt geldt ing’s strongest opponents. Cass and ; the Washdyke trained Sir Arthur t could also add interest to the finish. > Nicastro, which was running on for - his second placing behind Bobwood in the Novice Stakes at Winton, may be - capable of extending his record in the i Trial Stakes No. 2, but will not find j the task of beating Say Nothing, an : unlucky second behind Consistent at i Gore last Saturday, easy. Well Cut, i The Trek and No Fear will be others I entitled to consideration. ' Lituus Favoured Litmus, with three successive wins, . the last in the Post Handicap at Ric- . carton, should be favourite for the > Maungatua Hack Handicap. With a r capacity field likely, luck in the rush , for early positions will probably play ; a big part in the ultimate result. If the L Blue Flame gelding is fortunate [ enough to be well placed in the run- . ning he should have no trouble to extend his already consistent record. Flying Symbol, which has been , successful in three of her last four starts, and Humber Hawk, which was • beaten into fourth place in the Lyttel- ! ton Hack Handicap over one mile at Riccarton, are two which are expected to make Litmus work hard for victory. Tisred, an unlucky third at his last start, and Desert Cloud may do best of the others. Iroquoi ran her best race of the season when she came from a long way back at the straight entrance to finish second behind Litmus in the Post Handicap at Riccarton. The Defaulter mare was on the rails in the early part of the race and drifted several places coming round the top bend. Once in the clear after straightening up, she came home with a powerful run. Provided she is not buried in the field today her chances of success look bright. Landon, which added two wins to his already consistent record at Gore, and the Riccarton-trained Kiaree Beau may provide most opposition for Iroquoi. Skylight and Strathcarron, which is racing more generously now, will also command respect. Copperfield, Hope So, and Bobwood have been scratched in the Maungatua Hack Handicap, and this allows Santee, Super Slipper and Milling Bay to reenter the field. Other scratchings issued yesterday were: High Seas (Dunedin Handicap), Pepa (Trial Stakes No. 2), and Sawdust II (Autumn Handicap). Belgravia, which has bruised a heel. Export and Prince Ermine are doubtful starters. The weather in Dunedin was fine yesterday and there is every indication that conditions will remain the same. The track will be firm and fast. The double will be on the Otago Handicap and the Autumn Handicap. Additional riding engagements are:— E. G. Low: Dahlia, Jeune. No Fear. J. M. Cappie: Gloria Jan. J. Didham: Nicastro. B. J. PROSPECTS FOR today:

WESTPORT CLUB Although there was slight rain at Westport on Thursday night, the weather gen- ! erally has been fine and the track is exi pected to be in good order for the first i day of the Westport Jockey Club’s sumi mer meeting today. ; County Fermanagh and Beauty Queen ; were scratched for the Stewards' Hack ; Handicap yesterday. Although several of I the runners claim dual engagements, the fields have filled well, and should provide interesting racing. Appreciate, Beauty Queen. Topical Cim, and Happy all won at the Westland meeting, which concluded on Tuesday, and are expected to be prominent again in their engagements today. The only newcomer with last start winning form is Teko. which will have to be respected, even though he is opposed by open company horses. Happy is almost certain to be first choice with investors in the Summer Hack Handicap, first leg of the double. His task will not be an easy one, however. and the Revelation gelding should be fu’ly tested by Leprechaun, County Fermanagh, and Beauty Queen. Ngapunawai and Macduff may dispute favouritism in the second leg, the Arthur Clouston Handicap, and both are expected to run prominently. Costello, Moilynn, and Teko should add interest to the finish.
