fANE of the most sue- -— : cessful members of the New Zealand colts’ cricket team in Australia ’last month was N. Woods, a medium-pace left-arm swing bowler. Woods had - an outstanding introduction to senior cricket when he took 8 wickets for 12 runs for Kaikorai against Grange at Dunedin last week. s|c # # Twenty-four-year-old J. R. McDonald, of Wellington, who showed outstanding form to win the Canterbury men’s'lawn tennis title but who had to drop out of the New Zealand title because of a stomach injury, is again playing club matches in Wellington. McDonald is entered for the forthcoming Auckland invitation, tournament and if he shows there that his previous good form was not momentary he should be a certainty for the Australian visit. Weightlifting has helped to put more severity into McDonald’s play.

The New Zealand representative table tennis player, M. L. Dunn, of Wellington, will not play in the coming winter. He intends to concentrate on tennis to improve his ground strokes, but should return to table tennis next year.

The West Coast women’s lawn tennis champion. Miss J. Lambert, of Westport, should be an aquisition to the game in Christchurch, where she is now attending the Teachers’ College. She has joined the Cashmere club and in her first match for the senior team last Saturday beat her opponent with the loss of only two games.

A welcome return to Christchurch cricket was made this month by G. L. Perry, an Old Collegians all-rounder, who has been in Wellington for the last two seasons. Perry enjoyed quite consistent success for Old Collegians with his medium-pace right-arm bowling and his extremely determined batting when he was playing regularly in Christchurch. He also won a reputation as an outstanding slips fieldsman.

Much of the credit for South Brighton’s splendid showing in the main event at the New Zealand surf championships at Invercargill last week-end should be given to the coach of the team which won the Nelson Shield—Doug Tarrant. He is a member of the Canterbury and national boards of judges and chief inspector of "ear for the Canterbury Surf Association. - •
