EL GLAOUI DEAD

CAREER OF PASHA OF MARRAKESH

(Rec. 8 p.m.) MARRAKESH, Jan. 24. Thamisi el Glaoui, Pasha of Marrakesh, died in Marrakesh today. El Glaoui was aged about 84. He combined in his long life the roles of a feudal lord and an Ameri-can-style business man, wealthy landowner, and hardy warrior, politician, and patron of the arts. . He was a friend of Sir Winston Churchill, who was his guest several times in his Marrakesh palace and on hunting trips in the Atlas Mountains. The most spectacular move in the Pasha’s long political life came in October last year, when el Glaoui, who had bgen largely responsible for the expulsion of Sultan Mohammed Ben Youssef from the throne in 1953, announced that he favoured Ben Youssef’s return to power. This sudden change of policy by the powerful leader cleared the way for Ben Youssef’s restitution by France as ruler of Morocco, then torn by terrorism activity sparked by hii exile.
