ADDINGTON MARKET

EASIER PRICES FOR BEEF

Variable Sale For Sheep

BEST LAMBS IN DEMAND

Less beef is being consumed in the current hot spell of weather, and at yesterday’s Addington market beef prices dropped sharply when the trade filled its requirements. Steers became cheaper by £2 to £3. The best fat lambs continued to command prices in line with late rates and there was a sale of show lambs •at more than £5 a head, but other sorts were not easy to sell. There was a variable market for fat sheep. Fat wethers increased in price in the early part of the sale, but they later eased back. Fat ewes moved in the opposite direction. They picked up after easing earlier. The only bright spot about the cattle market was a strong demand for bulls, which made up to £39 12s 6d. FAT LAMBS The yarding of 968 fat lambs was of a generally better quality than at recent sales, and the best lambs sold fully firm on late rates. Medium lambs were somewhat easier and light lambs were not sought at all keenly by either the butchers or the few graziers. Several extra prime pens brought more than 80s, and one pen of six show lambs brought the outstanding price of £5 0s Id. These were Suffolk cross lambs from G. Moore (Okain’s Bay), which took top placings at the Duvauchelle show last Saturday. The yarding included a large consignment from the West Coast. Extra prime lambs made 70s Id to 82s Id; good. 60s Id to 68s Id; others, down to 46s Id. Sales included:— H. Matson and Company sold: on account of R. J. Dailey (Oxford), 16 at 59s Id to 65s Id; C. FAT CATTLE The current hot weather is having the effect of reducing the consumption of beef, and this was reflected in a more limited demand for this class of meat at Addington yesterday. The yarding was of about the same size as last week at 415 head, and some cattle of very good quality were among the selection.

The sale opened from a par to slightly easier for steer beef, but as the trade filled its requirements, the demand slackened and prices dropped by £2 to £3 a head. There were not tnany heifers in the sale, and for these prices did not show any marked variation. Only the very best and the very worst cows sold near late rates. The medium quality sorts eased by about 20s to 30s a head. Steers sold up to £45 17s 6d for one from R. A. Mould (Wainui). E. J. Myers (Marshland) sold a heifer at £32 12s 6d, and G. E. Parsons (Ashburton), 1 cow at £25 12s 6d. STORE CATTLE One of the bright spots in an otherwise depressed cattle market was the demand for bulls. There was no trouble in disposing of these, for which bids came thick and fast. A Shorthorn brought £39 12s 6d and there were several other sales between £3O and £35 17s 6d. The remainder of the store cattle entry was made up of oddments of unattractive quality which were not easy to sell. DAIRY CATTLE In the dairy cattle section there was an entry of 30 head, the bulk of whica were heifers of mainly average quality. The few cows on'offer were also of ordinary quality From the outset the sale was followed by only a small attendance and proceedings were lifeless, except in odd instances. On the whole the market was easier by 30s to 40s. For the few cows prices ranged from £l7 to £24, with an isolated sale at £3O. Best heifers realised from £l9 to £25 with odd sales of Friesians at £29 to £3l. The balance sold down to £lO.

VEALERS Although there was a large yarding of vealers all good sorts showed an appreciation of about 15s a head, with other types selling at about late rates. Though there were more cattle available than were needed there were no passings. Quality was varied with about half of good quality and about half of poorer quality. Values were:—large rununers, £lB to £24 18s 6d; large good vealers, £l4 to £l6 8s 6d; medium-weight good vealers, £ll to £l3 18s 6d; smaller good vealers, £8 to £lO 18s 6d; smaller calves, down to £3 18s 6d; large rougher sorts, up to £l6 Is; lighter rougher sorts, £ll to £l5 18s 6d: smaller rougher sorts, £8 to £lO 18s 6d; and others, £4 10s to £7

FAT PIGS The entry in the porker section was not nearly so heavy as last week, with oniy one truck from outside districts. Quality generally was not up to last week’s standard, far too many over-fat porkers and baconers being entered. Prices for good quality pork and bacon were fully up to last week, but a good many pens were unsaleable. In the chopper section the yarding was also smaller and values eased by £1 to 30s a head. Values were:—

STORE PIGS There was a much smaller yarding in the store pig section and quality was much better. Owing to outside competition, values for medium and large stores were much better, but small weaners were again hard to sell. Included ‘in the entry were 12 in-pig sows which made from £8 to £ll. PLEASANT POINT "The Press” Special Service TIMARU, January 23. There was a poor inquiry for the 100 head of fat cattle offered at Pleasant Point stock sale today, and values, if anything, showed a further decline. Store cattle were not wanted. Four hundred fat lambs and two races of fat sheep met a firm inquiry from butchers and exporters, with values for fat ewes showing an appreciation on last week’s rates. Store lambs comprised the bulk of the store sheep entry, and for good medium to best rape lambs there was a firm demand, values appreciating fully 5s a head on last week's rates at Temuka.
