ZIRCONIUM PRODUCTION IN UNITED STATES The United States Bureau of Mines has announced that it will cease to produce zirconium because of the increasing capcity of American private industry to produce the metal. Commercial production of the metal is a result of a decade of research and development. The bureau, which pioneered this development, was until last year the main supplier. It intends to put its zirconium factory on a standby basis and concentrate on problems which have limited uses of the metal.
Zirconium has various valuable properties as a construction material in the field of nuclear energy. Although it is almost as strong as steel, it is lighter, resists corrosion and has an extremely high melting point. Because it does not absorb neutrons needed to sustain a chain reaction, it is used in building atomic ovens.
