TELEVISION SETS IN AUSTRALIA
“PRICE WITHIN FAMILY BUDGET ” Amalgamated Wireless (A’asia), Ltd., was confident that the price of television sets would be within the family budget, said the managing director of the company (Mr L. A. Hooke) at the annual meeting in Sydney. Australia should have television tn a year or less. It was difficult accurately to forecast television sales, and it might be some time before the benefit was gained, he said. New developments in technique had made world television a possibility. Efforts to expand engineering equipment sales Beyond Australia were faced with severe international competition, particularly of countries with lower costs or a greater local market. The electronic field required continuing development and research for which the profit margins available did not permit of an adequate allocation. The chairman (Mr T. J. Parker)' said that the 2S per cent, bonus should not be regarded as an established rate. The company’s commitments and the trend of the national economy tended to a policy of conserving funds.
HIDE AND SHEEPSKIN AUCTION (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 24. Hides and salted sheepskins were in steady demand by exporters and tanners at the Auckland auction today. The salted sheepskin market was firm, but hides were slightly easier due to a weakening in the overseas market. MINING Clutha Dredge.—The Clutha dredge, operating at Alexandra, for the week ended January 20, worked 130 hours and recovered 125 ounces of gold;—(P.A.) Mount Isa Mines.—Mount Isa Mines, Ltd., is considering building a £2,00,000 copper refinery at Stuart, near Townsville. The chairman. Mr G. R. Fisher, said last week that the company had bought some land, but he would make no further comment. Taupo Totara Timber.—An interim dividend of Is 6d a share has been declared on shares held prior to October 31, 1955.—(P-A.)
