SHIP PUT UNDER ARREST

CHRISTCHURCH FIRM CLAIMS £5OOO (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 23. The ship Philippine Merchant has been placed under arrest at Whangarei. The vessel, owned by Henderson Trippe, of Manila, arrived in Whangarei nearly three weeks ago with a cargo of Japanese fertiliser. After some delay the cargo is now being unloaded and the writ nailed to the mainmast will not affect this work. The writ was issued by the Supreme Court at Auckland on the application of A. M. Satterthwaite and Company. Ltd., of Christchurch. The claim is for £5OOO for expenses of the vessel advanced by the firm. These were incurred in bunkering, the cost of ship stores and wages.

The ship cannot now clear harbour until the writ has been satisfied.

She is expected to complete unloading by the week-end.
