BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING Membership of the Lyttelton Public Library had increased to 983 adults and 571 children, said the report of the librarian, (Miss E. A. Champion) now resigned, received at the meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening. The number was well over the standard set by the National Library Service. However, the number of borrowers might have lapsed since the last re-registration two years ago, the report stated. The branch library at Diamond Harbour had developed rapidly last year, and was being efficiently operated by a small committee. The stock of the record lending library had been into S 3o ed from 25 lon £-Playing records

Industries Commission agreeing to the council’s proposal that the commission pay the council a fixed amount of £l2O a year for water supplied to the Centennial Hall. The difficulty of maintaining a full staff at the gasworks was emphasised in a report from the gasworks manager (Mr E. Turner). The position had become precarious, he said, and the works were considerably undermanned. Two alternative remedies were suggested—(l) to remodel the carbonising plant; (2) to install a highpressure pipe line from the Christchurch Gas Company and purchase gas in bulk “I feel that something will have to be done shortly,” concluded Mr Turner in his report, “as in my opinion stopend horizontal retorts have had their day. because labour cannot be obtained to work them.” The report was referred to the chairman of the gasworks committee (Cr. A. R. Champion) to report to the council.
