CANTERBURY MAN WINS ROAD RACE

(New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, Jan. 23. The titleholder, I. Hughes, of Canterbury, won the 10-mile roller skating road race at Hastings this morning in 45min 21sec. In second place was the first woman competitor, Mrs C. Lawrie, of Hastings, 50 yards behind the winner. D. R. Oliver, Hastings, was third. Two skaters who recently returned from the world roller skating championships in Spain, Valerie Whyte, of Napier, and John Baker, of Palmerston North, won the senior freestyle solo titles. The senior women’s half-mile was won by Miss C. Laurie (Hastings), with Mrs Beryl Timms (Christchurch) second. The North Island won the inter-island relay, and the aggregate points shield went to Napier.
