NAPIER WOOL SALE

Good Styles Sell At

Premium

AVERAGE FIRM ON AUCKLAND

(New Zealand Press Association) NAPIER, January 23. Prices for average-style wools on the first day of the Napier wool sale today were firm on those ruling at Auckland last Wednesday, while goodstyle wools made a premium. Prices over-all were described as highly satisfactory. , , ’ xu The official report issued by the Hawke’s Bay Woolbrokers’ Association, in conjunction with the New Zealand Wool Buyers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Commission, states that the opening day’s offering of 24,276 bales included 430 of scoured wools. It was submitted to a full bench of buyers, representative of all sections of the trade. The remaining catalogues, totalling 22,023 bales, will be sold on Wednes°The offering, which comprised a wide range of crossbred types from all Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay and East Coafct districts, opened up surprisingly well, in spite of the unfavourable wet winter, and although the standard was not up to the corresponding sale of last season, a fair proportion of the selection was quite attractive for style and condition. Vegetable fault was noticeable, and clips generally contained a little more dust, yellow and cotted wool. There was quite a quantity of short wool and many otherwise well-grown lines showed tenderness near the butt of the staple. Bellies and pieces also showed some discolouration, but in the main were of good-average to average description. A limited quantity of lambs’ wool was on offer, but many lines were a little dusty and irregular jin length and quality. Lines containing seed or burr sold at a discount. “Taking into account the fact that catalogues did not contain the same | proportion of spinners’ and paper felt types as is usual at this sale, and that The bulk of the wools were of average to good topmaking, prices could be regarded qs highly satisfactory,” the report says. “Competition was keen, with the Continent and America dominating the market. Bradford bought relatively sparingly. Compared with the Auckland sale last Wednesday, prices were firm for average style wools, while good styled wools, of which there was a significant weight in the offering, made a fully appropriate premium. America and Japan were especially keen on wools suitable for paper felts. The stronger qualities met a particularly keen market.

Paper felts made high prices, ranging, in the 48/50’s quality, from 64d to 70|d; for 46/48’s from 64d to 70d; and in 44/46’s from 65d to 68d.
