THERON MAKES PROGRESS

WAY THROUGH ICE FOUND LONDON, January 21. A weather reconnaissance flight has been made from the British Antarctic Expedition’s ship Theron now struggling through ice in the Weddell Sea. A message received in London from the Theron says: “Have made threehour reconnaissance flight showing easier ice 20 miles to north-west leading to better conditions north. Now engaged in breaking way out of pressure to free conditions.” The Theron has been held by ice in the Weddell Sea for three weeks. She is making for Vahsel Bay on Coats Land, part of the Antarctic coast, where the party of 17 explorers on board intends to establish a base in readiness for the main Commonwealth expedition which will start to cross the Antarctic overland next year.
