SURF BATHER DROWNED

SIX OF PARTY RESCUED (New Zealand Press Association) OTAKI, January 23? While swimming in the surf at Otaki' Beach today one of a party of seven which was in difficulties, was drowned. She was: Mrs Clere Norvak, of 175 Queen’s drive, Lyall Bay, Wellington. Three members of the Otaki Surf Club. John Housiaux. David Barrett, and Peter Garrett, were at the beach, though not on patrol, when the alarm was given. They entered the water fully clad and rescued six members of the party. Four were brought ashore on a surf ski -and two by reel and line. It was then discovered that Mrs Norvak was not among the rescued. The three surf club members again entered the water and brought her to the shore. After artificial respiration had been applied she was taken to the Otaki Sanatorium and given oxygen, but failed to respond. Housiaux also received hospital attention, but was discharged later.

FARMER KILLED BY GUN SHOT

MASTERTON, January 23. When his shot-gun accidentally' discharged while he was getting through a fence, Mr Thomas William Spinks Langdon, aged 64. a farmer, married, was killed instantly at Tinui late on Saturday afternoon. Mr Langdon was rabbit shooting at the time of the accident.
