CAPTURE OF MAU MAU
Leader Trapped In Swamp
(Rec. 10 p.m.) NAIVASHA (Kenya), Jan. 7.
The number three Mau Mau leader. "Field-Marshal” Mbaria Kaniu, was interrogated by intelligence officers today after being shot in the leg and captured in the battle of Naivasha swamp, 50 miles north-west of Nairobi.
Police sources said that the Mau Mau leader was half frozen and hungry when he was shot up yesterday by a police tracker team. The tough-looking Kaniu. longhaired and thin-faced, was junior in the Mau Mau hierarchy only to Dedan Kimathi and Stanley Mathenge. Police sources said that it was possible that Kimathi or Methenge were among the 70 “hard core” terrorists who have been trapped in eight square miles of lakeside swamp.
