MAN BELIEVED DROWNED

ATTEMPT TO CROSS FLOODED STREAM (New Zealand. Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 8. A man is believed to have been drowned this afternoon when crossing a flooded ford on a horse in the Makara Valley. He was:

Thomas Roma, aged about 25, who is thought to have come from Te Kuiti.

A worker on the Te Matama farm, South Makara. Mr Roma was crossing a ford on the farm when he was swept away. When last seen he was being sucked under a bridge further down from the ford.

The manager of the farm is reported tc. have tried to pull Mr Roma out of the water, but failed.

Mr Roma’s body had not been found late tonight. A search party will leave Wellington early tomorrow.

CHILD FATALLY INJURED FALL FROM BOOT OF CAR (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 8. A girl who was thrown out of the boot of a car on to the road outside the Rotorua Police Station by the impact of a collision on Saturday evening died at 11.55 p.m. in the Rotorua Hospital. She was: Pamela Audrey Stevenscn, aged 2 years 11 months, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. F. S. Stevenson, of Raumati Beach, The back seat of Mr Stevenson’s car had been removed to make room for tent poles and camping gear. At the moment of impact, the boot door sprang open, and the child was thrown out. FARMER FATALLY BURNED TRACTOR OVERTURNS (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, January 7. Charles Henry Tucker, aged 43, a farmer, of Konini, died in hospital yesterday after being seriously burned in a tractor accident. It is believed that the tractor rolled over and caught fire shortly after 1 p.m. on Thursday, when Mr Tucker was clearing a track beside a creek bed. Suffering from severe burns, Mr Tucker walked to his house some distance away. He was taken to the Pahiatua Hospital. BABY FOUND DEAD IN COT David Peter Jordan, aged three months, of Kennedy’s Bush road, Halswell, was found dead in his cot yesterday morning at the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs Raymond Nicholas Jordan. IKr Jordan told the police yesterday that his wife, Monica Gwendoline Olive Jordan, last saw their baby alive at 10 p.m. on Saturday. He was then sleeping peacefully. When Mrs Jordan went to look at the child at 6 o’clock yesterday morning he was dead. An inquest will probably be opened today.
