The December meeting of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Cactus and Succulent Society was held at the home of Mr and Mrs L. D. Roberts. New members were welcomed by the president (Mr F. L. Drury). A bring and buy for the society’s funds did good business. Competitions were won by Miss I. E. Moore and Mrs P. T. Mauger. Miss Margaret Sandrey was guest of honour at a gift party held recently in the Mount Somers Community Hall. The programme included recitations by, Daphne and Valerie Vincent, and folk dances by Elaine Wightman. Daphne Vincent. Shirley Cone, Pauline Vincent, Lois Wightman, and Valerie Vincent. Music for dancing was played by Mrs Collison. An enjoyable party was held recently by the United Croquet Club. Sixty members and their friends were welcomed by the president (Mrs McTeague). Fashion-conscious women in London and Paris will have to glitter if they want to be glamorous this season. Day clothes may be sombre, but at night the dresses must be all sparkle and light. The newest models are designed to make women shine like glow-worms in the thickest London fog. The key to this glitter look is a metallic thread called lurex, in colours of gold, silver, copper, red. royal blue, emerald green, fuchsia, and black. Designers are using lurex to brighten all kinds of fabrics, from handwoven tweeds to filmy gauzes. The glitter fabrics are as practical as they are glamorous. They can be dry-cleaned and laundered and they do not tarnish even in salt air.

The Olympic Games Organising Committee wants 375 women to volunteer for work as chauffeurs during the Games. They will drive cars for important visitors and officials from countries taking part in the festival. They will operate a fleet of 150 modern cars. There will be no pay- for these chauffeurs but all selected volunteers will receive a tailored uniform dress which will become their property. They will also receive a meal allowance. The uniform consists of a green skirt, a green jacket, a green beret with Olympic insignia, and two gold blouses.
