SOVIET PARTY IN ANTARCTIC
“DESTINATION NOW REACHED” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, January 7. The 12.600-ton Soviet ship Ob, flagship of the Russian Antarctic expedition, has successfully navigated the Davis Sea and reached its destination, Moscow Radio said yesterday. The report stated the ice was thick enough to permit the unloading of an aeroplane, tractors .and other equipment. Later a group of Soviet scientists reconnoitred the mainland to a ciepth of about 12 miles. The radio stated that the scientists were making a detailed search for a suitable place to establish an Antarctic station and an observatory. [The Davis Sea is roughly opposite the area in which the British expedition is now operating, on the other side of the Antarctic Circle.]
