Camber Selected For Greymouth Cup Today

TROTTING

(From Our Own Reporter)

GREYMOUTH. January 6. Camber, which was narrowly beaten by Clemency in the President’s Handicap on the first day of the meeting, will probably be a firm favourite for the Greymouth Cup. the feature race on the final day of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Victoria Park tomorrow. A disappointing field of eight is carded for the race, and there will be only two place dividends, as Banjo and Nipalong will be bracketed. On Thursday. Camber met trouble at the start and he had difficulty in working into a handy position without covering, two much extra ground. The Dillon Hall stallion has plenty of stamina, and if he begins smoothly he should be the hardest to beat. The Westport-owned and trained Johnny Gilbert was rather disappointing in his race on Thursday. He was checked early and drifted until he was about 72 yards behind the leader at the end of a furlong. He made up some ground over the last mile, without ever appearing likely to return a dividend. He looks a good type of pacer and appears to be endowed with plenty of stamina. The two-mile journey should suit him better than most in tomorrow’s race, and it will not be surprising if he wins. Spotlight, a winner over two miles last January, has raced well lately and she will have to be respected. Nipalong and Banjo have both won on the circuit and they will form a strong bracket for their Meth ven trainer, C. V. May. Brigadier Grattan, a surprise winner on Thursday, will have his supporters, but like the other starters, Red Hackle and Marionette, .he will not find it easy to beat Camber or Johnny Gilbert. Clue May Win Again Clue, a decisive winner on Thursday may win again in the first leg of the double, the Dominion Handicap. Clue is a brother to Pointer and he looks to be a good stayer. Reality was disappointing in her two starts on the first day of the meeting, but she may go better on the firmer track/ expected tomorrow. The Dillon Hall mare finished close up iri the Rangiora Cup, won by Thunder, last month, and on that effort must be respected. Parable gained an overdue win on Thursday, and while he may not go far. he is capable of making a bold showing in this class of race. Carntyne, which was narrowly beaten by Spotlight in the sprint race on Thursday, Caprice, and Chief Lady make most appeal of the others. * Form Prospect

s The second leg of the double will 'be run on the County Handicap, a . race for maiden trotters. Care, a fouri year-old gelding by the Dominion ; Handicap winner Precaution from a j smart trotter in Firewater, created a i good impression when he gained his first win on Thursday. He has a splendid mariner of trotting and looks to have a very bright future. If he trots as well in this race he should not be troubled to win again. Te Waihopi ran Care to a length and a half on Thursday, but Care could have this advantage. Te Waihopi comes in on 24 yards more favourable terms tomorrow and this could be a deciding factor. Lancewood has been trotting fair races lately, and if he does not have to work too hard to make up his handicap of 60 yards, should take part in the finish. Wakeful is another trotter to have shown speed in her races, and she will have prospects, as will Annie Laurie and Kauranui. The other races have all filled well, particularly the Empire Handicap, a race for probationary drivers. Thirteen starters are carded, and even if there are some scratchings a good race should result. There has been some rain in Greymouth today, but the outlook is for fair weather tomorrow, when the track should be in good order. Brackets are:— Runanga Handicap: Cinderella and Annie Laurie.
