POSTAL WORKERS’ UNIFORMS
SHORTS NOT POPULAR IN CHRISTCHURCH Most Christchurch postmen and women have declined to wear the shorts officially issued by the Post and Telegraph Department. A Christchurch Post Office official said yesterday that new shorts had been available to city postmen and women for two months. “So far, only eight of the city’s 40 postmen have taken to the shorts idea,” he said. “Six out of the city’s 30 postwomen wore shorts today.” “I saw one postwoman this morning in shorts rather on the short side.” said the official. “I don't know whether they were official issue.” He said that the official issue of navy shorts for pbstwomen were “not what you would call beach shorts by any means.” The shorts, come in fawn-grey for men, and they get open-necked matching shirts issued. Women have also been given slacks as a uniform issue, but only six Christchurch postwomen wore them on the job. “Some of the Christchurch postwomen prefer to wear their own type of slacks.” the official said.
