AUSTRALIAN SENATE
Election Results In Deadlock (Rec. 10.80 p.m.) SYDNEY. January 6. The Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, will have a deadlocked Senate after' July 1. This deadlock was confirmed today when an Anti-Communist candidate, Mr Frank McManus, gained the last of five Senate seats contested in Victoria at the December 10 elections. After July 1, when 30 of the present 60 Senators retire, party strengths in the Senate will be: Liberal-Country Party, 30; Labour. 28; Anti-Communist Labour Party, two. Mr Menzies has a majority of 28 in the House of Representatives, and observers expect him to push through important legislation quickly when Parliament resumes next month, so that he can use the Senate majority he holds until July 1. The two AntirComm unist Labour Party Senators—one did not have to contest the election—are both expected to support the Government’s election policy legislation, but could cause a deadlock on other matters.
