DUKE S NIECES IN LONDON
Luxury Flat Furnished By Uncle
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON. January 5. Two German nieces of the Duke of Edinburgh arrived in London today and moved into a luxury apartment furnished for them by their uncle.
The Princesses. Beatrix of HohenioeLangenburg, aged 20, and Christina of Hesse, aged 22. will share the flat in Dolphin square, Europe's largest apartment block, on the bank of the Thames.
Last month the Duke of Edinburgh drove the short distance from Buckingham Palace to Dolphin square to supervise the furniture movers. The Duke turned up some spare furniture of his own. which has been in storage at Windsor Castle, and has lent it to the girls.
They were “delighted” today with their uncle’s efforts. "The flat is charming and we are looking forward enormously to our stay in England.” one of the Princesses said. The flat has two bedrooms, a dining. room, kitchen and bath. It costs £lO a week. Both girls attended, school for a time in England and’ were last in London in 1953 for the Coronation. They stayed then at Buckingham Palace. This time they have come to continue more specialised studies. Princess Christina will study the restoration of paintings under Professor Anthony Bount. Surveyer of the Queen’s Pictures. Princess Beatrix will take a course in dressmaking at the Royal College of Art. "If the dressmaking goes successfully, I may take it up professionally.” she said today. The Princesses were accompanied today by Princess Beatrix's mother, Princess Margarita of HohenloeLangenburg.
