BAD WEATHER IN MELBOURNE
PACK ICE BLAMED
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, January 4. Pack ice from the Antarctic is blamed for Victoria’s poor Christmas weather.
Ships sailing, south of Australia near the Antarctic Continent have reported that pack ice has drifted up to 200 miles further north than usual for this time of the year.
The deputy-director of the Melbourne Weather Bureau. Mr John Lilly white, said that the pack ice was the most likely explanation of Victoria's Christmas weather—the worst in 84 years.
Rain has fallen in Melbourne on 15 of the last 16 days. Rain and gales during the holidays washed out thousands of campers and did thousands of pounds’ damage to farm crops. Yesterday, Melbourne’s temperature was 13deg below normal at 65deg. More rain is. forecast for the State.
