NEW YORK, January 3. Bulldozers yesterday carved their way to the site of Rear-Admiral Richard Byrd’s new Little America base on the Antarctic continent, a United Press correspondent reports from Kajnan Bay. The last five deep ice crevasses were packed during- the night and bridged to allow loads of supplies to be moved by tractor to the spot where some 60 members of “Operation Deep Freeze’’ win “spend the winter. As soon as the last crevasse had been bridged, supplies started to pour in for the construction of 17 buildings. Bulldozers began gouging out a two-lane flow of equipment and food needed for the project. The correspondent says that the icebreakers Edisto and Eastwind set out yesterday on a probing expedition through thick pack ice. The flagship, U.S.S. Glacier, sailed on a three-day cruise to make . a hydrographic study of Antarctic waters.
A “weasel” tractor convoy is preparing to depart from Kainan Bay for a 1000-mile round trip expedition that is expected to take 45 days on the snow-tracked vehicles.
