BOWLS Christchurch Centre’s Christmas Tournament

Play in the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s annual Christmas tournament commenced yesterday on five city greens, with 60 fours taking part. Many of the players, who have become accustomed to the very fast greens, found it difficult to master the slower conditions caused by the overnight ram. During the day the greens became a little faster, but accurate drawing was made difficult by the gusty wind.

Considerable interest was created by the game between Deavoll (Belfast) and Rowe (Opawa). Deavoll was fighting an uphill game most of the way. On the seventeenth head he was three down on the head, and with his last towl trailed kittv, but failed to hold on to it, and finished one down after a fine save. On the next head the kitty was shifted to the outside of the rink, and Deavoll with his two bowls drew two excellent shots. With two heads to go Rowe was leading 19-17, and on the second to last head Belfast was holding shot. The Opawa number two wasted his two bowls trying to run the shot bowl off, when there was ample room for a draw, and Belfast put in another shot, but Baxandall. playing three for Rowe, played firmly into the head and split the shot bowls and lay two shots. This shot was worth four points. To have any chance of winning Deavoll had to get a shot on this head. He failed with his first, a good bowl, and was not so sure with his last bowl. He played a little wide, turning one of the Opawa bowls in for third shot. This left him five down on the board, with only one head to play. His chances of getting a five on the last head against this strong Opawa four were very remote, and after the leads had played he had no hope of getting the required number of shots. He instructed his number two to try to burn the head with his last bowl, but he was unsuccessful, as was the number three. Deavoll then tried for the burn. He was very close with his first bowl, but missed the head completely with his last, leaving Opawa the winner.

An interesting game was seen between Kebby (Riccarton) and Cooke (Canterbury) at the Fendalton green. Kebby at the end of the sixth end was leading 11-1. Over the next six ends Cooke took six to Kebby’s five, but was still nine down on the board. Kebby remained on 16 for the next seven heads while Cooke s -orca 10 points to take the lead. 17-16. On the last two heads, however. Canterbury let Riccarton get a single on each, to win 18-17.

Chamberlain (Canterbury) had an overwhelming victory over Wills (Christchurch W.M.C.). On the first two heads each four scored a three, and from then it was Chamberlain all the way. He scored mostly two®, hut had a three, two fours, and a five in building up 38 to Wills's nine. Of 'h * 1 heads played. Wills scored on only fiv .

A last head, full of interest, was seen when Porter (Linwood) required three shots to tie on the last head against Rennie (Canterbury), and be succeeded in getting them. The kitty was forced into the ditch, and Porter held two definite shots, and on a close measure got the third to be level. On the extra head the Linwood load drew a shot, and tnen another was drawn by fhe number two but these two bowls were disturbed, and the Linwood number three drew another. Rennie, with both his bowls, tried to remove the shot bowl, but although he was very close, he just failed, and Linwood won a very exciting game in the latter* stages. 22-21.

Kebby (Riccarton) has a well-balanced four, with Dawkins, who has been runnerup twice for the champion of champions singles title, playing number three for him. This Riccarton four had a ham tussle with Cooke (Canterbury) in its first game, but won its next two comfortably. Probably the greatest surprise of the day was the failure of Ashton (Canterbury) to win a game. Ashton cannot now qualify. Bennett, a prominent skip from Linwood. failed in his first two games, but won the last of the day. He must win the next five games if he is to go to postsection play. McGarry, who is row living in Wellington. is taking part in the tournament with his old club, Christchurch, and had three very comfortable wins. This four is very strong, and it will not be surprising if it wins -oil its games in th*' «e nt< on nlnv. although it may have difficulty if ttic greens are heavy today. Williams (St. Albans), who has perhaps the finest record of any skip taking part in the tournament, had three good wins. At the end of the day’s play only nine of the 60 fours had won all their three «smes. In section C. which on paper is the strongest in the tournament, no four had scored three wins.
