WATCH AND WAIT IN FORM

COMFORTABLE WIN AT WASHDYKE

Watch and Wait, capably handled by the Riccarton apprentice, A. H. Eastwood’, gave her Sfipporters no cause for concern over the final stages of the Christmas Handicap, the first leg of the double at the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday. The four-year-old Count Rendered mare had a good trail behind the pacemaker. Super Maru, to the straight, and after turning for home she ran on strongly for a comfortable length and a half win. Desperado, after being handy throughout, ran on to add another second to his mounting record of minor placings. Dutch Flag was only half a head back in third place, with three lengths to Mundus. whi-h had been near the roar until the straight. Cornflake was next, followed by Roval Voyage. Gold Tin. and Argive. the win favourite, Super Maru. disappointed badly. After appearing to be going freely in the lead he stooped quickly in the straight, and had only Adversary behind him at the post. In the second leg of the double, the Levels Hack Handicap, Jimmy Flgish. narrowly beaten by Undergrowth at Hororata a fortnight earlier, gained a decisive win over Lord Fane and the favourite. Beau Chat. Philadelphia was two lengths back, followed by King Robin and Sir Arthur. The winning double dividend of £3t 15s for £1 was shared by holders of 1852 (5s tickets), on the Watch and Wait—Jimmy Flash combination. The meeting was held in fine weather before a good attendance.*The track was hard and fast. The totalisator. on-course, handled £32.836 10s. including £29?9 on the double, compared with £39,777 last year, a decrease of £5940 10s. The offcourse turnover, however, was well uo on last year, when the meeting clashed with the second dav of the Dunedin Cup meeting. On Saturdav the figure was £32,444 10s. compared 53^ 10 s ’ an increase of

The major upset of the day was the win of the little-fancied Targui—Miss Quickly colt, Tarbillon. in the Juvenile Handicap. Tarbillcn, after appearing to be beaten by Aquarius, fought gamely to get the decision by a nose, and return a win dividend of £69 13s The only other double-figure dividend of the day was that returned by Kansas. winner of the Fairlie Hack Hand:cap.
