BRIDGE DAMAGED BY FIRE
CONCRETE STRUCTURE WEAKENED i From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT December 26. When boys playing under the Ngakawau river bride on Saturday lit a fire, it spread and caused considerable damage to the bridge. The heat from the log fire affected the concrete bridge to such an extent, especially afer it had been necessary to suppress the blaze with water, that one span on the Westport end was seriously weakened. The bridge is 21 miles from Westport and will be able to be used by light traffic only until it has been repaired—work that may take some time. Meantime it is expected heavy lorries running between Westport and Karamea will have to run li«rht loaded.
