Horticultural Society’s Annual Rose Show Opens

One of the biggest and best rose and cut flower shows ever held by the Canterbury Horticultural Society opened in the Latimer Hall yesterday afternoon.

The total number of entries (520) showed a large increase over last year (386), 196 in the rose sections, compared with 93 last year. Cut flower entries totalled 129, against 88 last year.

There are 87 exhibitors this year, 16 more than last year. Both the president of the society (Mr J. R. Templin) and the judges said the standard of the entries was very high. The judge of the open section for exhibition roses (Mr H. G. Gilpin) said the roses generally were good in view of the season, which was perhaps three weeks earlier than last year. Mr W. J. Humm. judge of the decorative roses, said they were quite up to standard. A collection of cut blooms and shrubs is exhibited on the stage by Mr P. H. Vickery. Although the display is largely dominated by roses and peonies, the sweet peas and stocks in the foreground draw many eyes. The background is of maple, beech, fivefinger. and smoke-bush.

Begonias, fuchsias, geraniums, and variegated ivies make a good show. A colourful feature is a collection of gerberas (African veldt daisies) in colours ranging from cream through lemon and orange to pink and red, staged by the Rev. Father J. T. Taylor, of Southbridge. A “spirit of summer” class is included for the first time. The various interpretations of this theme include some conventional urns of mixed flowers in mixed shades. One entry portrays a terraced and trellised garden with a mirror witch-bowl in a pool.

The most comprehensive exhibit of native shrubs and blooms yet seen in Christchurch is on the Native Fldra Society s stand. Mount Cook lilies, mountain toi-toi and snapdragon, flowering and seeding clematis, olearia, and flax leaves are beautifully arranged. Other features of this exhl jt are a prostrate dwarf kowhai and the rare white double manuka discovered at Tapanui. Southland. Inere are also colourful Maori onions, which bear yellow torches, and purple veronicas and violet-edged flax. One of the finest displays of peonies ever shown in Christchurch is exhibited by Mr O. W. B. Anderson on a s P^S stand. It contains 45 varieties. The attendance at the show yesterday was the biggest for some years. The show will be open again from 10 a.m. today, closing at 9.30 p.m. Results:— PREMIER AWARDS ribbon for best rose in show: Mrs H - T - Jennings (McGredy’s Yellow). ' Best decorative rose, open: A.
