Distinctions Listed By Bishop The influence of old girls of St. Margaret’s College was wide in many parts of the world, said the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warten I. when the Governor-General (Sir Willoughby Norrie) laid the foundation stone of the college’s new buildings in Merivale yesterday morning. To select names was risky. Chambers, Lady Suoerintendent of the Christchurch Hospital; Allison Kyle, veterinary surgeon and lecturer at Canterbury Agricultural College: Dr. Elizabeth Flint, lecturer in botany at the University of Hull, who had done important research; Stella Purchas, one of the most outstanding missionaries provided by the Church in New Zealand, who had worked in China and was now in Nairobi, Kenya; Muriei Thomas, who represented New Zealand at the Student Christian Movement World Youth Conference in India in 1952.

Gillian Quentin-Baxter, awarded the first scholarship given by the Federated Universities of Western Germany to New Zealand; Jean Anderson, who had remarkable success in music at the Royal Academy and had won many scholarships and prizes; Natalie Taylor, now studying music at Lisbon Conservatorium with considerable success; Bobbie Vilaincour (nee Cameron Smith), who won the major scholarship at the Central Art School, London, and was later commissioned to paint murals for the Festival of Britain; Nancy Wise, winner of scholarships and prizes at the Guidhall School of Dramatic Art in London. Rose Reynolds, responsible for the period dresses worn and displayed in the Canterbury centennial celebrations and honorary custodian of costumes and relics for the Canterbury Pilgrims' and Early Settlers' Association: Jean Adams, New Zealand ski champion and representative at the last Olympic Games; Zoe Hudson, many times winner of the New Zealand women’s golf ehampionship, and Lucie Hogg, headmistress of,Woodford House School.

WOMEN’S CLUB CONCERT BY LITERARY CIRCLE The literary circle of the Canterbury Women’s Club presented its final programme for the year to a large audience of members and frienda last evening. The interesting and varied programme was arranged by Mrs J. Allott. Mrs F. G. Weideman, the retiring leader of the circle, and Mrs C. Brown, a member who is also retiring, were each presented with a gift and flowers by the president of the club (Mrs N. W. Gale). Those who contributed to the programme included Alison Dailey and John McLaughlan (piano duets), Mrs Valda Kincaid (songs), and Mr S. D. Wilson (recitation). A bracket of madrigals was sung by the Canterbury University College Madrigal Group under the leadership of Bill Hawkey. The casts for two Dickens sketches, “The Quilp Tea Party” and “The Beadle,” were Mesdames Freda Morris, Nola Dailey, Constance Wilson, Jean Harland, Sadie Grainger, Mr Wilson and Mr George McCleary. A Tudor play, “Catherine Parr,” was presented by Mr McCleary (Henry VIII), Mrs Elsie Witty (Catherine Parr), and Miss Lucy Widdowson (the herald). This was followed by a parade of the wives of Henry VIII, each of whom told her life’s atory.
