FORMER N.Z. PLAYER RETURNS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. October 26. Back in New Zealand after five years as a Rugby League footballer in England, 1950 All Black, George Beatty, reached Wellington thia morning on the liner Southern Cross. “The New Zealand team is up against enough opposition in England,** he said. “The standard of League there is pretty strong. Club sides very often beat international teams. “If a club side wants a good player it just trays him,’’ said Beatty. “TTiough transfer fees were high, these were paid to the club from which the player came and not to the man himself. “You get a signing on fee, £8 for • win, and £5 for a loss, as a general rule,” he said. “Of course, in a cup final you get £4O or £5O, but income tax takes £l6 of that" Other New Zealanders in British League doing well, said Beatty, included Neville Black, Joe Phillips, Peter Henderson, and Jack McLean, all playing in the Midlands. Beatty himself played for Leigh, in the Beatty said that after a short holiday in his home town. New Plymouth, he proposed to settle down in Auckland. He considered it about time he retired from footban.
