The Japanese Minister of Social Welfare, Mr Hideji Kawasaki, has not forgotten some of his 60.000 constituents while on his tour- of New Zealand. In Wellington recently he spent some time at a tobacconist’s shop buying pipes, and when he emerged he had 200 in his possession. The pipes will be given to his party chairman to divide among his selected supporters as British and New Zealand pipes are said to be highly prized in Japan. The 200 pipes were reported to have cost an average lof 15s.
