BOTTLE YARDS IN LINWOOD

RESIDENTS ALLEGE NUISANCE

A protest at "the infiltration of bottle-ohs” in his district was made by Mr R. J. Cornwall, president of the Linwood-Phillipstown Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association, when he

spoke at a meeting of Residents’ Affiliated.

Mr Cornwall said that the Christchurch Transport Board had served notice on Indians who had a bottle yard at the comer of Fitzgerald avenue and Ferry road. The Indians had bought properties on the corner of Phillips street and Leeds street and in the district felt very ( strongly about the matter. Sixteen ■had already signed a petition seeking ;the removal of the yard. The Indians hoped to be in operation by Christmas.

"We want to stop, if possible, the infiltration of this sort of thing, alongside our houses,” he said. "We will move heaven and earth to try to stop it. The yard is only 100, or 150 yards, from the Phillipstown School and church.

"Also in Phillips street I find another bottle-oh that has been built there. It/s the most horrible sight you ever laid your eyes on—front and back. It is full of old sacks, busted bottles and rotten crates and is a rat-infested area. This is a serious matter. There is a boiler there which is a definite fire hazard to the neighbourhood. The area is zoned light industrial and if a boiler is there, well, I do not know what a heavy industrial area is,” Mr Cornwall said. No action was taken by the affiliation.
