PRONUNCIATION OF NEW ZEALAND
Sir, —It was obvious surely to most people of average intelligence that “N’Zilland” wrote in humorous vein in the same way as the Very Rev. Dean Sullivan recently had a joking dig at the many who think we are invincible at Rugby, etc., and have never been beaten except by very bad luck or unfair play. A lot of people apparently took “N’Zilland’s” joke seriously; it was evidently too subtle for them to see the humour or irony. Radio serials, possibly, have permanently affected the ouuook of lots of people.—Yours, etc., DIGGER (PRONOUNCED DIGGER). October 21, 1955.
Sir, —Regarding the controversial pronunciation of "New Zealand,” I wonder how many readers have thought of the origin of the name. The Dutchman who first named it had the province of Zeeland in Holland in mind; therefore, correct pronunciation should be “Zayland.” Seriously, though, it is surprising how many “educated” neople seem to favous N’Zilland.—Yours, etc., NEWCOMER. ■ October 21, 1955.
