BUS TRANSPORT

Sir, —The fact that it is in the outlying areas that the Transport Board loses money causes me to direct your attention to the farcial manner in which some longer distance buses are dispatched to their destinations. Lewis street bus is supposed to serve the Hoon Hay area. Today I attempted to board the outgoing 4.44 p.m. bus at St. Asaph street. This full bus failed to stop. It was followed by twd partly filled No. 7 buses, one very\ late. Surely some official could have foreseen that the Lewis street bus, which transports working people to the outlying area, would be overcrowded by short distance passengers and taken suitable action. This instance is unfortunately not unique. No wonder people adopt other methods of travel. Old cars are not the answer to the transport question. A well run service is.—Yours, etc., DISGUSTED REGULAR.

October 12, 1955. [Commenting on this letter the general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) said: “On October 12 one 4.38 ]».m. bus to Hoon Hay road was running late and behind the Lewis street bus, with the result that the Lewis street bus carried a number of short-distance passengers, who would normally have travelled on the previous bus.”]
